The Three Cricket Formats and Popular Tournaments

Before you start betting, it helps to understand the cricket formats, because the style of play and the available betting markets differ across each one.

T20 — The Fastest Format

Only 20 overs, so every ball matters. BPL, IPL and the ICC T20 World Cup are the biggest tournaments in this format. Quick results mean in-play betting is most active here.

ODI — One-Day Cricket

Each team plays 50 overs. ODI matches take place in the ICC Cricket World Cup and bilateral series. Top Batsman, total runs and partnership markets are popular in this format.

Test — The True Test of Cricket

This five-day format is played over two innings. The ICC World Test Championship is the main competition here. Innings score, top wicket-taker and series winner markets are available.

BPL

The Bangladesh Premier League is Bangladesh's biggest franchise T20 tournament and the most familiar to local fans.

IPL

The Indian Premier League is the most-watched T20 league in the world and is very popular among fans in Bangladesh as well.

International Series

Bangladesh Tigers bilateral series and ICC events hold a special place for every cricket fan.

Football and Other Sports

Alongside cricket, you will also find football, tennis and other sports at mal bat. The next section covers how betting works across different sports.

mal bat Sports Betting Market Comparison

How Cricket Betting Differs from Other Sports

In cricket, many factors determine odds — wickets, overs, run rate and pitch conditions. In a Test match, odds can shift many times over five days; in T20, they can change every over.

In football, betting mainly covers match result (1X2), number of goals and the chance of both teams scoring. In tennis, set-by-set betting is popular. Understanding the rules of each sport makes it easier to follow the betting markets.

One aspect unique to cricket is the toss — it can have a notable effect on the match result, especially on a spin-friendly pitch. That is why many bettors focus their strategy on the toss market alone.

Whatever sport you bet on, remember it is a form of entertainment. Follow responsible gaming practices and never bet beyond your set budget.

Popular Cricket Betting Markets

mal bat offers a range of markets for cricket. The key idea behind each market is explained simply below.

Market How the Bet Works Example
Match Winner Pick which team will win the match. Team A or Team B wins — if you are right, you earn a profit on your bet.
Toss Winner Predict which team will win the toss before the match. Team B wins the toss — if it happens, your bet wins.
Top Batsman Which team will have the batsman who scores the most runs in an innings. If any batsman from Team A scores the highest, your bet wins.
Total Runs Over/Under Whether the runs in an innings or a full match will be above or below a set number. If the bookmaker sets the line at 160 runs, you choose whether the total will be over or under.
Top Wicket-Taker Which team's bowler will take the most wickets in the match. If any bowler from Team B takes the most wickets, your bet wins.
Multi-Bet (Multiple Selections) Combine bets from multiple matches or events. All selections must be correct to win. Pick the Match Winner in three separate matches at once — if all three are correct, the return is much larger.
Next Wicket In live betting, whether a wicket will fall on the next ball or in the next over. Team A is batting — if a wicket falls in the next over, your bet wins.

How to Read and Understand Odds

Cricket betting odds can be shown in three formats — decimal, fractional and American. The same value is shown in all three formats below.

Example 1 — The Same Value in Three Formats

Team A to win — stake ৳500. Decimal odds 2.50 = Fractional 3/2 = American +150.

If the bet wins, you get back ৳1,250 (৳750 profit + ৳500 stake). If the bet loses, ৳500 is gone.

In American format, the + sign shows how much profit you make on every ৳100 bet.

Example 2 — Odds on the Favourite

Team B to win (favourite) — stake ৳500. Decimal odds 1.25 = Fractional 1/4 = American -400.

On a ৳500 stake the return is ৳625 (৳125 profit).

In American format, the - sign shows how much you need to bet to make ৳100 profit. The favourite always has lower odds.

Decimal Odds Are the Simplest

Most bettors in Bangladesh prefer decimal odds because they are straightforward — multiply the odds by your stake to get the total return. Decimal 2.50 × ৳500 stake = ৳1,250 total return. The higher the decimal odds, the greater the potential profit, but the less likely the outcome is to happen.

mal bat Live Cricket Betting In-Play

Live In-Play Betting — Opportunities While the Match Is On

With in-play betting you can place bets even after the match has started. Odds update instantly when a wicket falls, a six is hit or an over ends. Following these shifts is the main appeal of in-play betting.

For example, if Team A has scored only 30 runs and lost 3 wickets in 5 overs of a T20 match, their odds of winning will rise noticeably. On the other hand, if Team B gets off to a strong start in the powerplay, their odds come down.

The over-by-over market lets you predict how many runs will be scored in each over. The wicket market also gives you the option of betting on whether a wicket will fall on the next delivery.

In-play betting requires quick decisions. Watch the match carefully and avoid placing extra bets out of emotion.

Some Useful Betting Tips

1

Bet According to the Format

The style of play and pace of the game differ across T20, ODI and Test. Focus more on the format you follow most closely. Pitch type and weather also affect results.

2

Set Your Budget First

Decide how much you will bet before each session and keep it separate. In a multi-bet, if all selections do not win you lose the entire stake — keep that in mind.

3

Start with One Market

For newcomers, it is a good idea to start with just the Match Winner market. Betting across multiple markets at once increases the chance of confusion.

4

Choose Your Odds Format

Decimal odds are the easiest for most people. Set the format you prefer — once you are used to it, the risk of miscalculating drops.

5

Betting Is Entertainment, Not a Source of Income

Cricket betting is for enjoyment — it is better not to treat it as a reliable source of earnings. Going in with a clear expectation that you may lose makes the experience better.

Cricket Betting FAQs

T20 has only 20 overs, so odds shift quickly and in-play betting is much more active. ODI is a 50-over game, so the pace is relatively slower and a team has more opportunity to recover at any given point. T20 matches generally produce higher run totals, so over/under lines are set higher as well.

In a multi-bet, the odds of each selection are multiplied together, giving you the chance of a larger return from a small stake. However, if any one selection is wrong, the entire bet loses. With three selections at decimal odds of 1.60, 1.80 and 1.90, the combined odds are 5.47 (rounded), so a ৳100 bet returns ৳547 if all three win. Understand the risk and start with fewer selections.

When a wicket falls, the batting team's chances of winning decrease, so their odds go up. The bowling team's odds come down. If a team keeps losing wickets in quick succession, the odds shift even faster. A wicket early in an over has a bigger impact because many balls remain. A wicket in the final over is settled based on the situation at that point.

If a match is fully cancelled, all bets are generally void and stakes are returned. If a result is reached via the Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method, bets are settled on the official result. In a multi-bet, if one match is cancelled, in most cases that selection is removed and the remaining odds are recalculated. Read the terms and conditions for the exact rules.

In slot games, RTP is stated as a fixed percentage. In sports betting, RTP does not apply directly — instead, the bookmaker builds a margin (overround) based on the odds and the volume of bets. Odds differ from match to match. On the volatility side, a multi-bet is similar to high volatility — there is a chance of a large win but the risk of losing is also higher.
